They stand out as one of many Chinese traditions that differ from Western lifestyles. With numerous wet markets around the city, they serve as an open food market where people can get the world at their He said it makes him feel like he\u2019s documenting his daily life. One of his collections even got published on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkongfp.com\/2018\/07\/03\/hkfp-lens-dominic-leung-captures-everyday-life-hong-kongs-wet-markets\/\">Hong Kong Free Press<\/a>, the city\u2019s most popular independent English-language news outlet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leung said there are many aspects that make wet markets unique, one of them being the cultural role in Hong Kong\u2019s visual landscape.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you think of Hong Kong, you think of tight spaces and crowds. But I think if you go to a wet market&#8230;It\u2019s refreshing. You\u2019re no longer surrounded by tall buildings,\u201d he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/uploads.knightlab.com\/storymapjs\/3f24dd3535e9614d936a9a6d2e5babaf\/hong-kong-wet-markets\/index.html \" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"100%\" height=\"800\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>The small and congested spaces in residents\u2019 homes also interfere with food storage as the city doesn\u2019t have the fridge or freezer space that North America does.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou literally have to buy food on a daily basis to keep things fresh without cluttering your place. If you\u2019re buying meat, you\u2019ll probably cook it and use it that day without storing it,\u201d said Celia Hu, editor-at-large at AFoodieBlog.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though these markets continue to serve as a vital part of Asian culture, they are encountering obstacles in competing with corporate supermarkets such as Wellcome and ParknShop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWet markets are very chaotic places, you\u2019re constantly bumping into people, trying to not get mystery water spilled on you, lots of bags, and especially if you go to a fish market it\u2019s quite gross,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hu said that the older generation tends to go to wet markets more than the younger generation who prefer the convenience of clean, air-conditioned grocery stores that offer pre-packaged goods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOlder people like going to the wet markets because it\u2019s a way for them to interact. They know all the regulars, it\u2019s great for them socially.
