(Reuters)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Story by Swidda Rassy, multimedia by Bronwyn Oatley<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Military troops and police have killed over 138 people during a protest in Myanmar on Sunday, making it the deadliest day for protesters since the beginning of the coup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daily protests have been ongoing for a month and a half in towns and cities across Myanmar after the military seized control of the country in a coup on February 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the darkest moment of the nation and the moment when the dawn is close. This is the time for our citizens to test their resistance against the dark moments,\u201d says Mahn Win Khaing Than, acting leader of the ousted Myanmar government in an Al Jazeera interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protesters are demanding the release of the National League for Democracy (NLD) leader Aung San Kyi who won the presidential election last November. The military is accusing the political party of voter fraud however, there is no evidence to support this claim. Kyi is currently being held at an unknown location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src='https:\/\/cdn.knightlab.com\/libs\/timeline3\/latest\/embed\/index.html?source=1DGLi-ofs4b1pIBw6bUUh-4_Hq2irlYWPo5c9uZmOS2k&#038;font=Default&#038;lang=en&#038;initial_zoom=2&#038;height=650' width='100%' height='650' webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen frameborder='0'><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>United Nations special envoy on Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, urged the U.N. Security Council to take action to stop the violence and restore democracy back into the country. &#8220;There is an urgency for collective action. How much more can we allow the Myanmar military to get away with?&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kyaw Win, founder and executive director of the Burma Human Rights Network, says that the U.N. is failing again at its duty to protect the people of Myanmar. \u201c International communities this is very important to do something not just wait [while] mounting dead bodies across Burma\u2026 we have failed to protect the Rohingya people and this is what is happening again and again,\u201d he said in a France 24 English interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A report published by the United Nations investigators in August 2018 accused Myanmar&#8217;s military of carrying out mass killings and rapes with &#8220;genocidal intent&#8221; against Rohingya Muslims, an ethnic minority in Myanmar. Kyi rejected all allegations of genocide when she appeared in court in December 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bill Richardson, a former US Ambassador to the United Nations and former friend of Kyi, says there may be a possibility for international assistance if Kyi confesses to her crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If she is able to speak out and acknowledges the crimes against the Rohingya people in a way that the international community would think is credible and honest, it&#8217;s still not too late.
