The co-produced Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment film has topped pandemic box office records since opening March 31, 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Godzilla vs. Kong \u2013 Official Trailer\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/odM92ap8_c0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>The official trailer for &#8216;Godzilla vs. Kong,&#8217; which opened last month.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The MonsterVerse, CGI filled film surpassed other Warner Bros. pandemic-era releases, such as <em>Tenet <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/scottmendelson\/2021\/04\/10\/friday-box-office-godzilla-vs-kong-plunges-67-tops-tenet-passes-60m\/?sh=53c40f1f5ff3\">($58 million),<\/a> <em>Wonder Woman: 1984<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/scottmendelson\/2021\/04\/10\/friday-box-office-godzilla-vs-kong-plunges-67-tops-tenet-passes-60m\/?sh=53c40f1f5ff3\">($46.2 million),<\/a> and <em>Tom and Jerry<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/scottmendelson\/2021\/04\/10\/friday-box-office-godzilla-vs-kong-plunges-67-tops-tenet-passes-60m\/?sh=53c40f1f5ff3\">($40.3 million).<\/a> This is good news for other films similar to <em>Godzilla vs. Kong,<\/em> as it has set a new revenue precedent for COVID-19-era releases.<em> <\/em>The film, that has yet to open in Brazil, Japan and parts of western Europe, has earned most of its sales from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-56641846\">China<\/a> and North America.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201-winter-2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2021\/04\/171655373_519409122410325_6815203537909797503_n.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201-winter-2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2021\/04\/171655373_519409122410325_6815203537909797503_n.png 1024w, https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201-winter-2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2021\/04\/171655373_519409122410325_6815203537909797503_n-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201-winter-2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2021\/04\/171655373_519409122410325_6815203537909797503_n-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Ticket sales have plummeted since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Graphic by Stephanie Leonardelli.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThe movie represents a way for people to slowly re-introduce themselves into a social environment.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite limits on attendance to theatres, the film had the largest opening weekend, shown in over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/04\/10\/godzilla-vs-kong-tops-60-million-the-best-pandemic-box-office-haul.html\">3,000 North American theatres<\/a> \u2013 more than any other film released during the COVID-19 pandemic. It reflects how eager moviegoers are to head back to the theatre for the newest and latest releases. <em>CNBC<\/em> says this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/04\/05\/amc-upgraded-as-godzilla-vs-kong-renews-confidence-in-the-box-office.html\">suggests summer films could be of similar success<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Josh Grode, CEO of Legendary Entertainment said to <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2021\/04\/godzilla-vs-kong-approaches-28-million-three-days-opening-1234726022\/\"><em>Deadline<\/em><\/a>, \u201cThe movie represents a way for people to slowly re-introduce themselves into a social environment.\u201d He went onto say that the film was a first step in getting back to the normalcy of life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201-winter-2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2021\/04\/173396114_511908343401231_2198124988558328125_n.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201-winter-2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2021\/04\/173396114_511908343401231_2198124988558328125_n.png 1024w, https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201-winter-2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2021\/04\/173396114_511908343401231_2198124988558328125_n-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201-winter-2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2021\/04\/173396114_511908343401231_2198124988558328125_n-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>COVID-19 has exacerbated long-brewing changes in the film industry. Warner Bros. announced this model of <a href=\"https:\/\/batman-news.com\/2021\/01\/16\/hbo-max-movie-teaser\/\">day-to-date releases in January 2021<\/a>, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. This model allows access for avid movie watchers to comfortably enjoy new releases from home. Aside from this online release, <em>Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em> performed surprisingly well in attendance and revenue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Canadians do not have access to HBO Max, they are still able to stream the film as a premium VOD on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iphoneincanada.ca\/news\/godzilla-vs-kong-premium-vod-canada\/\">iTunes, Amazon Prime Video and the Cineplex Store.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Julia Paolercio Godzilla vs. Kong, directed by Adam Wingard, has grossed over $200 million globally.
