{"id":76,"date":"2021-03-17T20:20:24","date_gmt":"2021-03-18T00:20:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201-winter-2021\/?p=76"},"modified":"2021-03-18T07:55:45","modified_gmt":"2021-03-18T11:55:45","slug":"ontario-now-in-third-wave-of-covid-19-says-ontario-hospital-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201-winter-2021\/2021\/03\/17\/ontario-now-in-third-wave-of-covid-19-says-ontario-hospital-association\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario now in third wave of COVID-19 says Ontario Hospital Association"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>By: Daniel Johnson<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>The Ontario Hospital Association said on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/web\/status\/1371513088801968131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twitter<\/a> that the province is now experiencing a third wave of COVID-19 infections, citing increases in variants and patients in intensive care.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The determination was made using data from Ontario\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/covid19-sciencetable.ca\/ontario-dashboard\/\">COVID-19 Science Advisory<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/covid19-sciencetable.ca\/ontario-dashboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/covid19-sciencetable.ca\/ontario-dashboard\/\">Table<\/a>, which shows that as of Monday an estimated 49 per cent of new cases were variants. This study indicated that the variant translates into an increased mortality risk for a 55 to 69-year-old male from 0.6 per cent to 0.9 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video alignleft\"><video height=\"720\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1280 \/ 720;\" width=\"1280\" controls src=\"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201-winter-2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2021\/03\/Multimedia-.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption>(Andrea Bennett\/Ryerson News)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;The Ontario government recently launched a provincial <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/release\/60688\/ontario-launching-provincial-booking-system-for-covid-19-vaccines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">booking portal<\/a> and customer service desk for COVID-19 vaccines. The portal went live on Monday and now accepts appointment bookings for people born in 1941 or earlier to get vaccinated at a mass immunization clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The province has administered over 1.1 million vaccine doses, including over 127,000 doses to long-term care residents. (CITYNEWS)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The medical officer said she is specifically concerned with an increase in the city\u2019s seven-day moving average, which increased from 354 to 420 from March 9 to March 15.
