{"id":99,"date":"2024-04-05T13:17:44","date_gmt":"2024-04-05T17:17:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201w2024\/?p=99"},"modified":"2024-04-13T09:32:00","modified_gmt":"2024-04-13T13:32:00","slug":"get-your-workout-in-before-your-workday-this-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201w2024\/2024\/04\/05\/get-your-workout-in-before-your-workday-this-friday\/","title":{"rendered":"Get Your Workout In Before Your Workday this Friday!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.holidaycalendar.io\/holiday\/walk-to-work-day#:~:text=Walk%20to%20Work%20Day%20becomes,to%20the%20UK%20and%20India.&amp;text=Despite%20global%20lockdowns%20due%20to,around%20their%20homes%20and%20neighbourhoods.\">Countries<\/a> such as the United States, Australia and the UK celebrate Walk to Work day this Friday April 5, 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This annual tradition encourages people to walk to their workplaces rather than drive or take public transportation, in turn promoting health, social and environmental benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWalk to Work Day is great because it\u2019s so easy to participate in,\u201d said Australian resident <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthpromotion.com.au\/workers-encouraged-to-get-walking-this-walk-to-work-day\/\">Sally Freeman<\/a>. \u201cWalking a kilometre only takes about 10 minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-f60206e3240f6cd7e7a6815b3bb3b333\">Health Benefits<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"796\" height=\"887\" src=\"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201w2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/197\/2024\/04\/1.jpg\" alt=\"info\" class=\"wp-image-116\" style=\"width:822px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201w2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/197\/2024\/04\/1.jpg 796w, https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201w2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/197\/2024\/04\/1-269x300.jpg 269w, https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jn8201w2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/197\/2024\/04\/1-768x856.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 796px) 100vw, 796px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/news\/item\/07-06-2022-cycling-and-walking-can-help-reduce-physical-inactivity-and-air-pollution--save-lives-and-mitigate-climate-change\">WHO<\/a>, <strong>walking for just 30 minutes per day reduces the risk of mortality by at least 10 per cent<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who work from home or do not have their workplace within a reasonable walking distance, it is still possible to participate in this yearly practice through small initiatives like taking a walk at lunchtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/better-together-the-many-benefits-of-walking-with-friends\">Harvard Health<\/a> states that walking can also be a great opportunity to socialize, which is another essential aspect of good health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Author of two JAMA Network studies on daily step counts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/27\/new-study-on-benefits-of-walking-frequency-speed-and-how-many-steps.html\">Matthew Ahmadi<\/a> said that 30-minute walks do not need to be consecutive. \u201cIt can be in brief bursts here and there throughout your day,\u201d said Ahmadi.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"National Walk To Work Day!\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZPtVV9ZFmuE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-6923303d0edd6571e38887ab4730f73b\">Environmental Benefits<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choosing to walk over other transportation options also<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.best.bc.ca\/storiesandnews\/the-environmental-benefits-of-walking-3-reasons-to-walk-more#:~:text=Improves%20Air%20Quality,to%20impacting%20our%20physical%20health\">improves air quality<\/a>, reducing the amount of harmful emissions that are generated and released into the atmosphere<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/energy-system\/transport\">International Energy Agency<\/a> reveals that global CO2 emissions from the transport sector reached nearly <strong>eight gigatonnes<\/strong> in 2022, a three per cent increase from the year prior.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20200317-climate-change-cut-carbon-emissions-from-your-commute\">Stephen Edwards<\/a>, head of policy and communications at British charity Living Streets describes the ability to walk to work as a \u2018low-hanging fruit.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s an immediate contribution that we could all make to reducing our personal carbon emissions by walking more of those short journeys,\u201d said Edwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Canada, a country that does not celebrate Walk to Work day, <strong>the transportation sector accounts for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazette.gc.ca\/rp-pr\/p2\/2023\/2023-12-20\/html\/sor-dors275-eng.html\">28 per cent <\/a>of greenhouse gasses (GHG) alone<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The federal government of Canada released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/services\/environment\/weather\/climatechange\/climate-plan\/climate-plan-overview\/emissions-reduction-2030\/sector-overview.html#sector6\">2030 Emissions Reduction <\/a>plan in 2022 which outlines a course of action to mitigate these climate change contributors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/content\/dam\/eccc\/documents\/pdf\/climate-change\/erp\/factsheet-06-transportation.pdf\">transportation sector<\/a> focuses on funding objectives to support the country\u2019s Zero-Emission Vehicles Program (iZEV), including a great deal of additional funding for ZEV charging stations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"It&#039;s National Walk to Work day today.
