{"id":418,"date":"2021-01-22T18:46:16","date_gmt":"2021-01-22T18:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/?p=418"},"modified":"2021-01-22T20:16:14","modified_gmt":"2021-01-22T20:16:14","slug":"mental-health-takes-a-hit-during-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/2021\/01\/22\/mental-health-takes-a-hit-during-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental Health takes a hit during COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Bell Let&#8217;s Talk Day is soon, but more Canadians are dealing with stress, anxiety and depression during the global pandemic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Bell Let\u2019s Talk Day approaching, there has been a 40 per cent decrease in Canadians\u2019 mental health since the beginning of COVID-19, according to the Canadian Mental Health Association.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/letstalk.bell.ca\/en\/#EXT=CORP_OFF_URL_letstalk_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bell&nbsp;mental health event <\/a>will take place on January 28, 2021 to raise awareness and funds for people suffering from mental illnesses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of 2019, Bell Let\u2019s Talk has raised over one hundred million dollars, since its debut in 2011, <a href=\"https:\/\/letstalk.bell.ca\/en\/news\/1228\/tomorrow-is-bell-lets-talk-day-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to their website<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cmha.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CMHA-UBC-wave-2-Summary-of-Findings-FINAL-EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The study by the Canadian Mental Health Association<\/a> has shown that 48 per cent of participants experiencing mental health concerns during the pandemic do not feel they are in need of help. Further, 22 per cent of these participants said they did not know that virtual mental health services existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"piktowrapper-embed\" style=\"height: 300px; position: relative;\" data-uid=\"52077361-my-visual\"><div class=\"pikto-canvas-wrap\"><div class=\"pikto-canvas\"><div class=\"embed-loading-overlay\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"60px\" alt=\"Loading...\" style=\"margin-top: 100px\" src=\"https:\/\/create.piktochart.com\/loading.gif\"><p style=\"margin: 0; padding: 0; font-family: Lato, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-weight: 600; font-size: 16px\">Loading&#8230;<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><script>(function(d){var js, id=\"pikto-embed-js\", ref=d.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0];if (d.getElementById(id)) { return;}js=d.createElement(\"script\"); js.id=id; js.async=true;js.src=\"https:\/\/create.piktochart.com\/assets\/embedding\/embed.js\";ref.parentNode.insertBefore(js, ref);}(document));<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">(RSJ\/Katie Newman)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/release\/59922\/ontario-declares-second-provincial-emergency-to-address-covid-19-crisis-and-save-lives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stay-at-home order in Ontario<\/a>, which began on January 14, will make it increasingly difficult for those at risk to access their mental health services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ontario Ministry of Health recently released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.gov.on.ca\/en\/pro\/programs\/publichealth\/coronavirus\/docs\/resources_ontarians_experiencing_mha.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a resources list<\/a> for those experiencing mental health and addiction issues during the pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the document, they recognise, \u201cit may be more challenging at this time to connect with your existing publicly funded mental health and addictions provider or peer support group.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though, the Ministry of Health also said it is, \u201cworking with providers to find ways to support both new and existing clients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bell Let\u2019s Talk Day has also <a href=\"https:\/\/letstalk.bell.ca\/en\/covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posted a webpage filled with resources<\/a> to help those dealing with mental health and addictions issues during the pandemic.
