{"id":426,"date":"2021-01-22T21:42:15","date_gmt":"2021-01-22T21:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/?p=426"},"modified":"2021-01-22T21:42:16","modified_gmt":"2021-01-22T21:42:16","slug":"covid-19-hits-another-milestone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/2021\/01\/22\/covid-19-hits-another-milestone\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 hits another milestone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On January 15<sup>th<\/sup>, COVID-19 deaths hit the two-million-mark, John Hopkins University announced.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, 85,422 more people have died from COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COVID isn\u2019t just overwhelming health care systems across the world, it is also hitting close to home, here in Ontario.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.knightlab.com\/libs\/timeline3\/latest\/embed\/index.html?source=1UiY9CXoK7D7Him6tcv5DI8DOCU4GAim31yb_HFq3eLk&amp;font=Default&amp;lang=en&amp;initial_zoom=2&amp;height=650\" width=\"100%\" height=\"650\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"\" mozallowfullscreen=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 21, Ontario had 5,614 COVID-19 deaths, which is an increase of 46 deaths from the day before.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ontario has been in a province-wide lockdown since Dec. 26, which saw the toughest restrictions possible since the first lockdown back in March. Since the lockdown started, the province announced a state of emergency and a new stay-at-home order.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ontario\u2019s 7-day average of daily cases is 2751, down from its highest point on Jan. 10<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;at 3945 cases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ontario\u2019s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David Williams, said, at a press conference on Jan 18., that the province-wide lockdown won\u2019t be lifted until cases are, \u201caround or below 1,000.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City of Toronto has been in lockdown since November 20<sup>th<\/sup>, and the city have started to see the results. At a press conference on Jan. 21, Toronto Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Eileen De Villa, said the R number was below one for the first time in months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The R number represents the number of other people infected from a single infection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-bar-chart-race\" data-src=\"visualisation\/5051679\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Practically speaking, it means that we have a slight advantage over the virus,&#8221; de Villa added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But restrictions aren\u2019t changing anytime soon. &#8220;It is very early going&#8230; The tide has not turned,&#8221; she said.
