From the NHL to the NBA various leagues have taken different approaches to COVID-19 protocols and prevention.

With the NBA returning to play nearly a month before the rest of the sports world, they have worked out most of the kinks in their plan to prevent the spread of COVID-19. On the other hand, the NHL returned to the ice less than 10 days ago so they’re still learning their lessons. Here are two lessons the NHL can take from the NBA.

Stronger Implementation of Masks in Communal Spaces

The NBA has taken strong measures to ensure the use of masks on the bench, in locker rooms and during transport. This has proven to decrease the spread drastically within teams.

Fining Individual Players

One of the biggest cases in the NBA of Covid protocol violation has been that of Kyrie Irving. Following the violation Irving was personally fined $50,000 and gave up his salary for the games he will miss due to quarantine. In the NHL Alex Ovechkin and three other teammates violated Covid protocol but instead of the individual players being fined the organization as a whole was fined $100,000. The NHL should consider fining individual players as opposed to an organization that already has billions of dollars.

Over the past couple months we have seen the return to sports across the board.
