{"id":471,"date":"2021-01-23T01:58:57","date_gmt":"2021-01-23T01:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/?p=471"},"modified":"2021-01-23T01:58:57","modified_gmt":"2021-01-23T01:58:57","slug":"university-students-still-dependent-on-their-parents-new-study-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/2021\/01\/23\/university-students-still-dependent-on-their-parents-new-study-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"University students still dependent on their parents, new study shows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2021\/01\/vector-creator-3-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2021\/01\/vector-creator-3-1.png 800w, https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2021\/01\/vector-creator-3-1-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2021\/01\/vector-creator-3-1-768x513.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>(RSJ\/SERENA LOPEZ)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent survey by Maclean\u2019s shows that forty-four percent of university students consider their relationship with their parents to be the most important one in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts say emotional and financial support play a significant role in shaping the relationship today\u2019s university students have with their parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peter Lenco, an assistant professor in the department of sociology at St. Francis Xavier University, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/education\/university-students-remain-closely-tied-to-their-parents-emotionally-and-otherwise\/\">Maclean\u2019s<\/a> the economic burden of tuition and living costs that has since significantly increased than in previous generations is keeping students more dependent on their parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Statistics Canada\u2019s Tuition and Living Accommodation Costs (TLAC) survey of full-time students at Canadian degree-granting institutions, full-time Canadian undergraduate students in 1972 paid on average the equivalent of $534 in today\u2019s dollars in tuition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today Canadian undergraduate students pay on average $6,463 in tuition according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/190904\/dq190904b-eng.htm\">Statistics Canada.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lenco says because university is such a huge investment students rely on their parents for advice on careers, finances, and education to help them navigate their own path to living independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"container-wrapper-genially\" style=\"position: relative; } js = d.createElement(\"script\"); js.id = id; js.async = true; js.src = \"https:\/\/view.genial.ly\/static\/embed\/embed.js\"; ref.parentNode.insertBefore(js, ref); }(document));<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Vedarth Vyas, a third-year computer science student at York University told Maclean\u2019s that living at home while attending university positively contributes to his mental health due to \u201cthe physical closeness and support system that his family provides.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aspect of physical closeness that living at home provides students with is what Iyson Schafer, parenting author and counsellor, told<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/4427074\/are-1st-year-university-students-dependent-on-parents-yes-but-thats-ok-expert-says\/\"> GlobalNews<\/a> can also hinder students&#8217; ability to gain independence, critical thinking, and problem-solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schafer said because students have the ability to easily keep in contact with parents over text than in previous generations parents shouldn&#8217;t feel obligated to be as involved with their child\u2019s education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Education professor at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, Tisha Duncan, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/family\/archive\/2019\/09\/how-college-changes-parent-child-relationship\/598630\/\">The Atlantic <\/a>that parents may feel more inclined to be more involved in their children\u2019s college education in part because of how expensive it has become and the growing use of technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Duncan said with parents being more active in their child\u2019s college life they could \u201cbe delaying the development of problem-solving skills that come with living independently.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent survey by Maclean\u2019s shows that forty-four percent of university students consider their relationship with their parents to be the most important one in their lives.
