{"id":488,"date":"2021-01-23T03:21:30","date_gmt":"2021-01-23T03:21:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/?p=488"},"modified":"2021-01-31T04:53:48","modified_gmt":"2021-01-31T04:53:48","slug":"whatsapps-updated-privacy-policy-spark-data-security-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/2021\/01\/23\/whatsapps-updated-privacy-policy-spark-data-security-concerns\/","title":{"rendered":"WhatsApp\u2019s updated privacy policy spark data security concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Recent changes to WhatsApp\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/legal\/updates\/terms-of-service\">terms<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/legal\/updates\/privacy-policy\">privacy policy<\/a> offer new links between the messaging service and Facebook, its parent company, with users seeing this as a shift in its data safety and privacy practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this month, WhatsApp users were notified of the service\u2019s updated privacy policy with additional options to discover and communicate with businesses. Users were asked to accept these changes by Feb. 8 or lose access to their account.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many users subsequently fled the app, seeking alternative messaging services such as Signal, which offers end-to-end encryption, and Telegram, which offers limited encryption options, wrote Shira Ovide in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/13\/technology\/whatsapp-data.html?action=click&amp;module=RelatedLinks&amp;pgtype=Article\">The New York Times<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signal received about 7.5 million installs globally from the App Store and Google Play, from Jan. 6 to Jan. 10, according to mobile app analytics firm, Sensor Tower as stated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/whatsapp-facebook-data-signal-download-telegram-encrypted-messaging-2021-1\">Business Insider<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/signal-telegram-whatsapp-and-imessage-choosing-a-private-encrypted-chat-app-11610550076\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a> further explored the pros and cons of Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp and iMessage, acknowledging Signal as the most private app.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn more about the updated privacy policy by speaking to Joe Masoodi, policy analyst at the Ryerson Leadership Lab and Cybersecure Policy Exchange:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"768px\" src=\"https:\/\/story.interviewjs.io\/ouz6TgrLEpBGCW1J82jUmp\"> <\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following users\u2019 concerns and confusion, WhatsApp announced, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.whatsapp.com\/giving-more-time-for-our-recent-update\">blog post<\/a>, that the changes will be pushed to May 15th to allow individuals to \u201cgradually review the policy at their own pace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In several blog posts and social media correspondence, WhatsApp reiterated that the updated policy will not affect the privacy and security of personal messages and calls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We want to address some rumors and be 100% clear we continue to protect your private messages with end-to-end encryption. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6qDnzQ98MP\">pic.twitter.com\/6qDnzQ98MP<\/a><\/p>&mdash; WhatsApp (@WhatsApp) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WhatsApp\/status\/1348839600333049857?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 12, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><figcaption>[whatsapp\/twitter]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe changes are related to optional business features on WhatsApp, and provides further transparency about how we collect and use data,\u201d WhatsApp stated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/faq.whatsapp.com\/general\/security-and-privacy\/answering-your-questions-about-whatsapps-privacy-policy\">blog post<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recent changes to WhatsApp\u2019s terms and privacy policy offer new links between the messaging service and Facebook, its parent company, with users seeing this as a shift in its data safety and privacy practices.
