{"id":543,"date":"2021-02-05T20:32:33","date_gmt":"2021-02-05T20:32:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/?p=543"},"modified":"2021-02-05T20:38:37","modified_gmt":"2021-02-05T20:38:37","slug":"covid-19-104-cases-this-week-across-ontario-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/2021\/02\/05\/covid-19-104-cases-this-week-across-ontario-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19: 104 Cases This Week Across Ontario Schools"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>104 active COVID cases were reported this week across the schools authorized to resume in-class learning in Ontario, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/data.ontario.ca\/dataset\/summary-of-cases-in-schools\/resource\/8b6d22e2-7065-4b0f-966f-02640be366f2\"> data<\/a> collected by the Ontario government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Education Minister Stephen Lecce gave the green light last week for 11 school boards across the province to have students return to school on Feb. 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe government agrees with the growing consensus in the medical community that returning students to in-person learning is essential to the wellbeing, development and mental health of children,\u201d Lecce said in a<a href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/statement\/60154\/280000-more-ontario-students-to-return-to-class\"> statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The school boards authorized to resume in-class teaching are the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario&nbsp;<\/li><li>Conseil des \u00e9coles publiques de l&#8217;Est de l&#8217;Ontario&nbsp;<\/li><li>Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l&#8217;Est ontarien&nbsp;<\/li><li>Conseil scolaire de district catholique du Centre-Est de l&#8217;Ontario<\/li><li>London District Catholic School Board&nbsp;<\/li><li>Ottawa Catholic District School Board&nbsp;<\/li><li>Ottawa-Carleton District School Board&nbsp;<\/li><li>Thames Valley District School Board&nbsp;<\/li><li>Upper Canada District School Board&nbsp;<\/li><li>Conseil scolaire catholique Providence&nbsp;<\/li><li>Conseil scolaire Viamonde&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Amongst those 11 school boards, the highest number of COVID cases were reported across the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, which constitutes 143 schools scattered in the country\u2019s capital.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-scatter\" data-src=\"visualisation\/5191124\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:177px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The other boards reported less cases, understandably so as they operate fewer schools, for the exception of the Thames Valley District School Board which encompasses 161 schools.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-hierarchy\" data-src=\"visualisation\/5202224\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>An increase in the number of youths testing positive for the virus in the province had been anticipated by experts. \u201cWe have seen before that increased screening of children returning to school reveals more COVID-19 in our community,\u201d said Ottawa Medical Officer of Health Vera Etches in a statement last week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Etches said that the number of positive cases in these establishments should stabilize as schools have demonstrated a low transmission rate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>104 active COVID cases were reported this week across the schools authorized to resume in-class learning in Ontario, according to data collected by the Ontario government.
