(Courtesy of Chris Wattie\/CP)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NDP said they plan to end all for-profit long-term care homes by 2030 if elected to federal government, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-ndp-makes-potential-election-pledge-calls-for-elimination-of-for\/\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Canadian Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a press conference on Friday, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh called on the current federal government to work with provinces to establish national standards for caring for the elderly in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Singh\u2019s call to action comes in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disproportionately affected the vulnerable elderly population in Canada\u2019s long-term care homes, especially in for-profit homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Ontario, for-profit long-term care homes have worse outbreaks, on average, than non-profit and municipal care homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1503\/cmaj.201197\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A 2020 study<\/a> on COVID-19 in long-term care homes found that for-profit homes were associated with larger outbreaks and more deaths than non-profit homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-table\" data-src=\"visualisation\/5203001\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>In Ontario as of Feb. 4, 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/how-ontario-is-responding-covid-19#ref-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the government reports<\/a> that deaths in long-term care homes account for over 57 per cent of total COVID-19 deaths. Outbreaks are also common in these care homes, which account for one in five of the province\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publichealthontario.ca\/en\/data-and-analysis\/infectious-disease\/covid-19-data-surveillance\/covid-19-data-tool?tab=outbreaks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">almost 6000 outbreaks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/5203979\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the long-term care sector has been criticized for not doing enough to protect its residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The failures of this sector are partially due to a lack of support for staff and a lack of regulations, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/rsc-src.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/LTC%20PB%20%2B%20ES_EN_0.pdf\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/rsc-src.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/LTC%20PB%20%2B%20ES_EN_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 2020 report<\/a> by the Royal Society of Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/5204110\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The elderly population of these care homes also plays a part in the high number of deaths, as people over 70 are the most likely to die after contracting the virus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndp.ca\/news\/lets-take-profits-out-long-term-care-and-implement-care-guarantee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">An NDP press release<\/a> on Friday criticized the federal government\u2019s approach to caring for the elderly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNobody should be profiting off the neglect of our loved ones,\u201d Jagmeet Singh said in the press release. \u201cThe NDP will continue to fight to make sure people are ahead of profits.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NDP leader Jagmeet Singh takes part in the federal leaders&#8217; French-language debate on October 10, 2019.
