{"id":624,"date":"2021-02-07T04:23:32","date_gmt":"2021-02-07T04:23:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/?p=624"},"modified":"2021-02-07T04:31:14","modified_gmt":"2021-02-07T04:31:14","slug":"2021-golden-globe-nominations-raise-questions-about-diversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/jrn-305-2021\/2021\/02\/07\/2021-golden-globe-nominations-raise-questions-about-diversity\/","title":{"rendered":"2021 Golden Globe Nominations raise questions about diversity."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/pVC7tuxwlu15sVc_DCJe0_xjIQmrWCFe4K2FVri_1WShrmdLo4sonjaI8XucSCHgMkYV7NA2q9wKwwMaheZpKluqOsDYD725v7aH82DLH2VJQBdt60zLWPUS_hfV8uywHw97Y9c\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"345\"\/><figcaption>This years Golden Globe Award show will be held on the 28th February 2021.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2021 Golden Globe nominations have caused debate about diversity in Hollywood award shows.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s nominees were mainly from movies and shows produced for streaming websites, because of the impact the pandemic has had on the way we watch film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an article reacting to this year\u2019s nominations the CBC\u2019s Senior Entertainment writer, Eli Glasner, pointed out the lack of diversity in the best motion picture drama category.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt a time when some of the most vital stories feature people of colour, the Globe voted to exclude those films from their most prestigious prize: best motion picture drama.\u201d&nbsp; Glasner said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2020 Nominations vs 2021 Nominations&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peter Bradshaw, the film critic at the Guardian noted that the nominees for best director reflected positively on the award show.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn terms of diversity, the Globes have not disgraced themselves, with three out of the five director nominees being women: Emerald Fennell for the brilliant rape-revenge satire Promising Young Woman, Regina King for the true-life 60s encounter One Night in Miami and Chlo\u00e9 Zhao for the docudrama Nomadland\u201d Bradshaw said in an article.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comparing this year\u2019s nominees to last years, the award show is doing better when it comes to making sure that it reflects the diversity present in society.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/5206313\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:54px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/5206337\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Snubs&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The British TV Series I May&nbsp; Destroy You did not receive any nominations despite being described as one of the best shows of 2020 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5912862\/best-tv-shows-2020\/\">New York Times<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5912862\/best-tv-shows-2020\/\">Times Magazine<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reacting to the show\u2019s lack of nominations Deborah Copaken, a writer from the Netflix show Emily in Paris, expressed her frustration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was a writer on Emily in Paris, but your show was my favorite show since the dawn of TV, &amp; this is just wrong.
