Religious extremism in Pakistan is a problem that has taken thousands of innocent lives. While Pakistan is a Mulsim majority country, there is various religious minorities within the sects of Islam and outisde of it including Shias, Ahmadis, Hindus and Sheikhs.

Shia genocide is a problem that has plauged Pakistan since approximetely the early 1990’s and the amount of violence has increase exponentially in the last decade. Various anti Shia groups including Lashkar E Jhangvi and Sipha-e-Muhammad target esteemed indviduals in Shia society including doctors, educators and business professionals along with other innocent members of the faith.

The leader of Lashkar E Jhangvi told Reuters that those who follow the Shia faith are “the greatest infidels on earth” and called for the Pakistani government to declare them non-Muslim which would take away many human right from them, including the right to vote. In a Muslim majority third world country like Pakistan being declared non-Muslim would remove the Shias from the protection of the law. The outcome of situations like these can be seen in communities like the Ahmadi faith who were declared non-Muslim by President Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto during the writing of Pakistan’s Second Amandment in 1947.

The anti-Shia regime is a confusing one as the founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah was infact, Shia himself. Despite that well known fact sectarian violence continues to increase across the country.

Most recently, 11 Hazara Shia miners in the northern province of Baluchistan were stopped on their way to work and beheaded. This display of the murder of innocent Shia’s at the hands of an anti Shia extremist group sparked outrage on social media in Pakistan and across the world resulting in weeks long protests across Pakistan.

Statistics via Stats pak

By: Duaa Rizvi For decades sectarian genocide as torn apart Pakistan.
