{"id":46,"date":"2022-03-04T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-04T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/owenkroppsblog\/?p=46"},"modified":"2022-08-29T16:21:26","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T16:21:26","slug":"head-coach-of-ryerson-basketball-is-happy-with-rams-win-and-is-excited-for-the-future-of-canadian-basketball","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/project.journalism.torontomu.ca\/owenkroppsblog\/2022\/03\/04\/head-coach-of-ryerson-basketball-is-happy-with-rams-win-and-is-excited-for-the-future-of-canadian-basketball\/","title":{"rendered":"Head Coach of Ryerson basketball is happy with Ram&#8217;s win and is excited for the future of Canadian basketball"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-heading\">&#8216;Canada in 5 to 10 years is going to be a basketball powerhouse&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ryerson Rams beat the University of Toronto Varsity Blues by a score of 84 to 79 at the Mattamy Athletic Center on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the win, the Rams take sole possession of third place in their division, three games back of first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game was close through the first three quarters but the Rams were able to get some separation towards the end of the game and take the win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rams head coach David DeAveiro said the team elevated their play in the fourth quarter by improving their defence and sticking to the game plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.journalism.torontomu.ca\/owenkropp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/358\/2022\/03\/Bball-Rim.jpg\" alt=\"A view of a basketball rim from underneath. (Via Nitin Rana, Pexels.com)\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>DeAveiro says he has worked in Canadian basketball for over 10 years and is excited about the CEBL team the Fraser Valley Bandits announcing the hiring of new head coach Mike Taylor earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taylor has a renowned resume in international basketball; most notably being the head coach of Poland up until last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to DeAveiro, esteemed coaches coming to coach here is only going to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re gonna see more guys who play in the CEBL get to the NBA and be successful. I think with coaching too, I think you\u2019re gonna see CEBL coaches move on to the NBA or different leagues around the world,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Saturday, the Canadian women&#8217;s basketball team officially qualified for the FIBA Women&#8217;s Basketball World Cup that is taking place later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coach DeAveiro says he works closely with one of the members of the coaching staff of the women&#8217;s team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe women have done a tremendous job. The players have bought in, the best players and the best coaches are there. They\u2019re building with their new coach and looking for success in terms of being on the podium,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DeAveiro had some thoughts about what Canada could be doing better to foster the growth of basketball here in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn the women&#8217;s side, I would love to see a WNBA team in Toronto.
