Three Verification Tools put to the test

Your own name is something that you don’t usually forget, unless you are the first lady of the United States. According to sources from the Burrard Street Journal, Melania Trump seemed to have “forgotten” and miswrote her own last name.

The Story

“Melania Trump accidentally signs name ‘Melania Trudeau’ “

Brief Synopsis: Melania Trump allegedly incorrectly signed her name at a recent Trump campaign rally. While autographing a fan’s hat, she accidentally wrote the last name of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the place where “Trump” should have been. Upon realizing her mistake, she was very embarassed and acknowledged that she made a mistake. However, when she was mentioning that she wrote the wrong last name, she allegedly forgot again what her real last name is.

The Verdict

There is no evidence to prove that Melania actually signed her name as “Trudeau”. The article is simply a recollection of what happened, there is no proof. Additionally, the photo used in the article has some very obvious edits done to it. If Melania really did incorrectly sign her name, it is expected that there will be a photo of just that. However, instead of having a photo of her signing, the article includes two separate photos joined together. Since the headline is about Melania signing the wrong name, at first glance the photo does make sense. Justin Trudeau is on one side and Melania and Donald Trump are on the other, with a photo of the wrong name. However, on second thought, it becomes easy to realize that the only thing being shown is one large photo that is composed of three smaller photos which have nothing to do with eachother. Even beyond just looking at the image, three verification tools were run to prove its validity. The first tool was unsucessful in doing so because it directed towards sites that used the image for humour. The second tool was unsucessful because it could not find the origins of the image. The only thing it could find was the device the image was screenshotted from and the time and day this was done. The final tool was also unsucessful as the page could not even read the image. Taking all of this into account, the verdict will be that the image was fake and edited to look the way it did.
