From data to graphic: how to create effective data visualizations

Ryerson University is located in downtown Toronto, surrounding the picturesque location of Yonge-Dundas Square. Since it is so conveniently located, lots of people choose to commute to Ryerson rather than live on residence. There are many options available for those who commute.

In this blog post, I will take you through two graphics that show how Ryerson students get to school in the winter. The purpose of these graphics is to show the different modes of transportation that students take and how this has changed in a year.

!function(e,i,n,s){var t=”InfogramEmbeds”,d=e.getElementsByTagName(“script”)[0];if(window[t]&&window[t].initialized)window[t].process&&window[t].process();else if(!e.getElementById(n)){var o=e.createElement(“script”);o.async=1,o.id=n,o.src=”https://e.infogram.com/js/dist/embed-loader-min.js”,d.parentNode.insertBefore(o,d)}}(document,0,”infogram-async”);

This graphic shows the results from the 2020 poll for how Ryerson students get to university in the winter. It is represented as a pie chart to show that all of the students are a part of whole. This is also to show how many more people use TTC and/or Go Transit than any other option.

!function(e,i,n,s){var t=”InfogramEmbeds”,d=e.getElementsByTagName(“script”)[0];if(window[t]&&window[t].initialized)window[t].process&&window[t].process();else if(!e.getElementById(n)){var o=e.createElement(“script”);o.async=1,o.id=n,o.src=”https://e.infogram.com/js/dist/embed-loader-min.js”,d.parentNode.insertBefore(o,d)}}(document,0,”infogram-async”);

This graphic is a double bar graph that compares the results from 2019 and 2020 for how Ryerson students get to university in the winter. The results for personal vehicle, walking and cycle are fairly similar. However, the number of responses for TTC and Go Transit went up by 171 votes. It is definitely the preferred mode of transportation.

To conclude, TTC and Go Transit were the preferred modes of transportation in both the 2019 and 2020 poll. Walking has the second highest number of responses. There were a small number of people who walk or use their own vehicle, so it is likely that those people live on or near campus.
